One of the main concerns for policymakers in recent decades has been the declining population growth. To address this concern, several suggestions have been made. The Family and Youth Protection Act represents the latest volition of policymakers to alter the population growth trend. In addition to incentive mechanisms, the dominant view of this law has been the adoption of punitive measures which are also effective in population growth. Therefore, in addition to limiting sterilization and providing contraceptives, this act has also provided the guarantee of criminal executions. Furthermore, the law has altered the rules for issuing MEDICAL ABORTION licenses. A quick overview of Article 56 of the Family Protection and Youth Law indicates that the legislature has attempted to decrease the number of MEDICAL ABORTIONs by replacing the judicial approach with a MEDICAL approach. Manifestations of this approach can be observed in the process of processing MEDICAL ABORTION licenses, altering the structure of licensing applications, and intensifying criminal measures. This act has also made changes in the case of licensing rules. Despite the desired objective of policymakers, the authors maintain that MEDICAL ABORTION is more of a MEDICAL issue than a judicial one, and any alterations in this case should be performed meticulously and in consultation with experts. It is therefore suggested that the new provisions of this act be revised and the role of forensic medicine in issuing MEDICAL ABORTION licenses be highlighted.

During the recent years, there have been challenges surrounding the issue of ABORTION in the country (1-3). It seems that these tensions stem from the failure to consider the executive problems associated with the existing procedure to be followed for ABORTION. Screening and ABORTION therapy suffer certain shortcomings and problems that have not been dealt with yet, not due to wrong rules but because of inappropriate implementation and ignoring the MEDICAL ethics from the stage of screening to issuing the permit for ABORTION....

ABORTION is the termination of pregnancy either spontaneously or intentionally before fetus develops sufficiently to survive outside its mother’s womb. Not all zygotes, which are the result of spermatozoid and ovum fertilization, will reach implantation stages and too many pregnancies terminate inevitably because of fetal or maternal causes. The data on maternal mortality rate and complications which unwanted pregnancies face and the number of attempts for induced ABORTIONs is considerable. Although, at the first glance, it seems that ABORTION is a MEDICAL issue, but diverse fields have their statements according to their approaches. These statements are often expertised, judgmental and incisive but most of them are theoretical discussions and cover different beneficiaries and the mothers’ decisions, rights and health for the continuation or termination of pregnancy may be of the least concern. Even in the cases of the mothers’ or fetuses’ illnesses, the decision on maintaining the health of pregnant mothers depends on other dimensions of interest. This article, without agreeing or disagreeing with  ABORTION, provides information on pregnancy and ABORTION, and the reader is left free for the analysis and decision making.

Introduction: Induced ABORTION is defined as MEDICAL or surgical termination of pregnancy before fetal viability is achieved either due to maternal or fetal causes. Considering the potential complications of surgery and anesthesia, hospitalization, costs and time spent, MEDICAL induced ABORTION has replaced surgical treatment in the past two decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of vaginal Misoprostol (Prostaglandin E1) in MEDICAL termination of first trimester pregnancy. Methods: This descriptive analytic study was done on 100 women in first trimester of pregnancy that referred for termination of their pregnancies to hospitals affiliated to Mashhad University of MEDICAL Sciences in 2006. Vaginal Misoprostol (800  mg) was prescribed and in cases of failure of induced ABORTION, a second dose followed 24 hours later. Control sonography was performed in all patients to detect any residue of pregnancy one week later. In failed cases of induced ABORTION or the presence of residue, dilatation and curettage (D & C) was done. Data were analyzed by Chi square test and p value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: In our study 83 women (83%) had successful complete ABORTION. MEDICAL ABORTION was achieved by first dose of vaginal Misoprostol in 55 patients (62%) while in 28 enrolled women (34%) a second dose of vaginal Misoprostol was needed. D & C was done in 17 cases. No side effects were noted due to vaginal Misoprostol treatment in our study.Conclusion: MEDICAL ABORTION in first trimester pregnancy with vaginal Misoprostol showed a safe and cost-effective treatment modality.
